COME RAIN OR COME SHINE BBC Weather Relaunches To Face The Future Viewers of the weather on the BBC will notice some significant changes to the BBC Weather service from October 2nd 2000. Starting with Breakfast - the new morning show from the BBC - BBC Weather will offer users across all platforms an increased number of services. As weather reporting becomes increasingly complicated by environmental and climate changes, BBC Weather will provide the most informative, relevant and up-to-the-minute weather information using the latest technology.
“BBC Weather - pan-BBC - will play a pivotal role in reporting the impact that global warming will have on our lives,” comments John Teather, Head of the BBC Weather Centre, “The new services will become the first choice for quality and accurate weather reporting, combining the talents of the BBC with the world-renowned UK Met Office.”
The BBC Weather Centre is the largest broadcast meteorology centre outside of the US, with a twenty-strong team of qualified professional broadcasters including Helen Young, Isobel Lang, David Braine and Peter Cockcroft. The ‘new look’ BBC Weather service will be consistent across all of the BBC’s services - BBC ONE, BBC TWO, BBC News 24, BBC World, BBC Online, Ceefax and Digitex - providing the latest national and international information and forecasts twenty-four hours a day.

The highlights of the new service from BBC Weather include:
BBC Television Using techniques featured in Jurassic Park and developed by the Earthwatch Company, state-of-the-art 3D graphics will provide ‘fly throughs’ during presentation
A series of new graphics to illustrate weather phenomenon will be introduced including:
• Jet Streams: (High level winds that have direct effect on weather)
• Shower Probability: Showing the areas of highest rain risk
• New radar prediction will predict where it is going to rain within the next 6 hours to a high degree of accuracy
• Humidity - Showing the humidity throughout the UK
• Precipitation Types - Showing where rain is changing to snow
A larger number of Risk indices. Environmental and lifestyle risk factors will be emphasised using a scale of 1-10 with 10 being ‘Very High Risk”. The existing Sun Index will be joined by the following new indices:
• Air pollution: A combined index of all gases will be provided for 105 cities with a 72 hour forecast including graphics to show ebb and flow across UK and Europe
• Tree Pollen Risk will be included in the existing pollen risk to offer a comprehensive report
• Flood Warning A Flood Risk index for England and Wales
